Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (PID)

Example of a PI Diagram

It shows instrumentation

For example a motorized damper

Some entities have identifiers

The motorized damper's id is +XK1=VE01-SM10

In this case the identifier consists of location, system, entity

Basement 1, Ventilation Unit 01, First motorized damper on supply side

The dashed line shows that it takes a Digital Output (DO) from the switch board

This means that it recieves an on or off signal

Another example is a Temperature Transmitter

This means that it sends an analog input (AI) to the board

Another important feature is the line type

No dashes = flow

Dashes = return

The arrows also indicate flow direction

Lastly, we have references to other pages in the same document
